'Helium balloons' at children's parties are not a significant source of consumption. Not only that, but universities get a subsidized price for helium (at least in the U.S.). And medical equipment? Give me a break. This idea of selling safety or health or some other bogus bunk is a scam to ensure funding for programs with questionable scientific merit so the educational and medical institutes can justify their mystique of outrageous funding and billing levels. They sell their own self importance.

By focusing attention on this grossly insignificant use for helium, Dr. Wothers does a great disservice by detracting people away from the real culprits of consumption which are technical and cryogenic applications as being the real reason for the depletion. He would be more effective at preserving existing supply on earth by attacking wasteful government subsidies to universities and work to block poorly considered science and engineering applications by seeking alternatives where ever possible and offering them up so we can all benefit, rather than being brow beaten, by his education.

If he wanted to go after balloons, he should go after those idiots who feel they have to prove their manhood by diving from the edge of space from a helium balloon. His statement for the BBC is completely irrational and unscientifically founded and will do nothing meaningful.

Over the next 30 to 50 years, let's think of ways to mine helium from lunar soil or from the outer planets. We might make greater progress by considering these problems than popping a child's party balloon.

Jayme.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7960343306536592656.post-48379020148573575292012-12-11T08:40:43.144-08:002012-12-11T08:40:43.144-08:00Oh doe!
