Church required to remove billboard declaring 'Jesus Heals Cancer' having been ruled false advertising.

A church billboard proclaiming that "Jesus Heals Cancer" has breached advertising standards by suggesting the church can offer something other churches cannot, the Advertising Standards Authority has ruled.

Napier's Equippers Church had a billboard saying "Jesus heals cancer - church but not as you know it."

It drew a number of complaints including from a mother whose son had cancer.

"As the mother of a three-year-old boy who has spent the past 18 months fighting against leukaemia, I find the above billboard offensive and upsetting," the complainant, identified only as Jody Condin, wrote.

"It shows no compassion and understanding to those in our community that have journeyed through cancer and lost loved ones."

In her initial complaint, Condin said the billboard made her blood boil "and brings back sad memories of those I have lost in my life due to cancer. It is false advertising."

She said the billboard was dangerous and deceptive as it could potentially offer false hope and lure in the vulnerable in their time of illness and sadness.

"I would be more than happy if this billboard was to read 'Jesus Heals' and that way it could be interpreted to mean he heals spiritually/emotionally which I believe is more along the lines of what the church are trying to say."

Equippers Church told the authority that it was never their intention to create offence, division or contention in the community.

They had already removed the billboard but wanted an Advertising Standards Authority ruling on it.

Their new billboard said "Jesus Heals every Sickness & Every Disease - Matthew 4:23".

The church said they believed the Bible as the authoritative and reliable source of information and it gave numerous accounts of Jesus healing people.

"Our belief is substantiated by the fact six people within our congregation have testified to Jesus healing them from cancer," the church said.

The church said religious advertising and freedom of speech were vital components of a free and democratic society.

Pastor Lyle Penisula recognised that using ''the C word'' made some families uncomfortable and believed this was why the billboard hit the limelight.

''In the days of Jesus, leprosy was the word of fear, that everybody sort of walked around, and Jesus in his day healed leprosy. In today's day cancer is probably the modern day leprosy and people just want to tread carefully around it.''

However, he maintained his belief that Jesus could cure cancer.

In its consideration, the Advertising Standards Authority said it had looked a photograph of the billboard which was clearly identifiable as an advertisement for the Equippers Church.

But it said the billboard made its statement as a "strong absolute statement of fact" when it should be stated as a belief of the church. It breached the advertising code of ethics on that ground.

The authority said it acknowledged the vulnerability and sensitivities of some of the public exposed to the advertisement, but said it was unlikely that people suffering from cancer may forgo conventional medical treatment because of the statement "Jesus Heals Cancer".

The authority said that while the church wanted to offer "a message of hope" its billboard was provocative and would cause offence to people who were dealing with, or knew people who were dealing with, cancer.

It said the billboard could cause confusion for some people as it could be interpreted as meaning the Equippers Church was able to offer something that other churches could not.

  1. They can change it to "Jesus Heels Dogs" because that's about all he can do.

Spend some time at a Children's Hospital, in the cancer ward, and you'll get first hand knowledge about how prayer is a waste of time.

    1. U obviously are lost. the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. you, sir, are in the perishing process right now. you are dying right now. of course, spiritually, you are already dead, with a ticket in your wallet that says : ETERNAL HELL SOON. NOW, if you will get on your face and repent of your sins and ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you and declare with your tongue that He is the Son Of God, risen from the dead, you can be saved and be given a TOTALLY NEW RECREATED SPIRIT.

Does Jesus heal cancer? He certainly can. He doesnt do it a lot as far as we can see. That's another discussion. The more important concern is your soul. I want you to count this post as a warning and an invitation to you today, from the Lord God who loves you so much & gave His life for you.

Respond with humility. Don't be dead. U cannot fight God. it's laughable.

    2. so you speak for god? that's a pretty powerful claim, next time you and him/her chat, ask him whats up with this world of disease hunger and famine? and why, if we're intelligently designed, did he/she make us to breath, eat and speak through the same hole? guaranteeing that some percentage of us will die from choking? why did he/she make it that we require water to live but then cover 70% of the planet with salt water that is lethal to us? logically speaking, since the earth is covered 70% in salt water, then it's obvious to conclude it was designed for fish and ocean dwelling creatures, is it not?

and don't tell me we're smart enough to filter the water, if we can use science like that for our survival, how is it any different than using science for genetic research to eliminate diseases for our survival? why is one just survival and the other playing god? i don't understand...

  2. People really are defined by their enemies.
A percentage of people have to hang tough in their desperate quest to resist obeying crazy messages on billboards. It reminds me of Fight Club where they changed one to read using motor oil to fertilize lawn grass. Scary to even think about it. What is it like to fear such 'problems'? Fortunately, I will never know.

  4. The complainers should flip this around and lay the accusation on the drug companies and the cancer industry. In fact, it is they who have no compassion or understanding, and who offer false hope as they hold themselves out as “experts”.

It is the cancer industry’s false advertising that is dangerous and deceptive, offering false hope and luring in the ignorant and vulnerable.
I have watched several people die of cancer after following the false hope of a protected cancer industry; an industry that has never cured anything.

It is they who, in their pursuit to protect their industry and profits who block real doctors who are really curing cancer. Cancer, including lukemia, is not some mystery, except to the cancer/pharmaceutical industry. People need to wake up and do their own research, and then they will find out the truth, because they are never going to get it from an industry that can only sustain itself by not curing cancer, and offering misleading information and false hope instead.

  5. Jesus can heal lots of things, but Jesus cannot make stupid peoples to get anything wiser or smarter. When will these American apes ever evolve?

Do they still think that the Earth is flat?

  6. Typical. Espousing prayer and faith healing instead of medicine, both normal and alternative. Prayer may help the soul, and raise spirits. But used alone, it cannot cure cancer, nevermind the common cold. A combination of both, if it works for the person and helps them through a very trying time, is good.

  10. Of those six parishioners who were healed of their cancer, it would be interesting to see (a) how many of them are completely cancer free or simply in remission and (b) how many of them underwent scientifically proven medical treatments.

If they are simply in remission, they can't be said to be completely cured. And if they underwent medical treatment, their cures can't be attributed to Jesus.

  11. I would like to see if they even had cancer in the 1st place. It's a common claim to say one was healed of a unseen disease but not once have any of them produced medical records to show they had it to begin with. This has been asked of several fiath healing preachers and all refuse say must take it on faith.

And then if any did have it did they seek treatment that would cause curing or remission? My bets are it's a combo of lies and treatment. No prayer no Jesus no God ever healed a single person that can be proved. Should be easy now a days to do that.

And for the record there is a growing number of us fighting against religion in America. We might need a bigger stick though to combat all the stupidity in this nation. :(
