Russia, China must pay a price for backing Assad: Hillary

Taking a tough stand, US Secretary of State Clinton on Friday said Russia and China must pay a price for supporting the Syrian regime led by Bashar al-Assad.

Speaking at 'Friends of Syria' conference in the French capital, Hillary said: “Every nation must make it clear that Russia and China will pay a price as they're holding up Syria progress".

She further urged allies at the meeting in Paris to demand from Russia and China that they end their support for the Syrian regime.

According to reports, the US secretary of state that Moscow and Beijing would gain nothing by standing up for Assad, adding their actions were intolerable.

Syria’s allies, Russia and China, are not taking part in today’s conference.

French President Francois Hollande opened the 'Friends of Syria' conference with a demand that 'Syrian President Bashar al-Assad must go'.

The French leader underlined a "human and political necessity" to curb violence in Syria.

About 100 delegations are meeting in Paris in another attempt to decide what should be done to end the bloodshed in Syria.

Syrian opposition leaders are pressing diplomats at an international conference for a no-fly zone over Syria, but the US and its European and Arab partners are expected to focus on economic sanctions instead.

The gatherers aim at bolstering the Syrian resistance and pressing Syria's allies to discuss transition strategies for the embattled country after 16 months of brutal crackdowns and civil war.

US and European diplomats are expected to threaten new sanctions on President Bashar Assad's regime if he fails to quickly implement a UN-brokered peace plan.
