The blackouts caused by Superstorm Sandy have allowed photographer Randy Scott Slavin to create a series of images he calls NYC Unplugged, showing Manhattan plunged into darkness. He took to the streets in the early hours of Wednesday to document the eerie ambiance of the Big Apple with the lights switched off.
23rd Street & 5th Ave looking West
"On the night after NYC was decimated by Hurricane Sandy, downtown NYC was in the midst of a power outage that plunged it into complete darkness. I felt the call to hit the eerily dark streets and show New York as it is rarely seen."
The Flatiron Building, 23rd St and 5th Ave
Randy placed his Nikon D800 with 14-24mm lens on a tripod and used exposures of between 30 seconds and one minute to get the required effect. Trekking around with my tripod I was able to get the long exposures necessary to see in the dark.
6th Street & 2nd Ave
"These were taken between 12am and 3am on Tuesday night/Halloween morning and there were very few people around, the streets felt deserted and eerily calm.
St. Marks Church in-the-Bowery, 10th St and 2nd Ave
"The lights are cars. In some places there were many and in some places there weren't - you can tell by the degree of streaking. All of the streetlights were out, so people were driving cautiously.
8th Street and 5th Ave looking North
"There was no place to buy food below 38th Street, everything was closed. It was pretty much desolate besides some road flares and some cops."
