Law abiding, police-loving, kind, sweet and harmless.
These are just some of the words Angela used to describe her 80-year-old mother who is in Credit Valley Hospital recovering from hip surgery after being Tasered by Peel Regional Police last week.
Not dangerous, criminal or menacing.
Claims by police sources who said Tuesday there was a woman chasing a man down the street with a meat cleaver are just false, Angela says.
“It’s not true. She did have a bread knife but she was alone. She lives alone,” she said in an interview with the Toronto Sun Wednesday. “My father died 12 years ago.”
She said her mother “thought it was afternoon” and went “out for a walk” and “was in a state of confusion.”
And Angela says she is outraged that police chose to Taser her.
“She is an 80-year-old woman,” she said. “Why would they do that? I could have done a better job. I could have defused that situation.”
The senior has not been charged.
Her daughter questioned police training and says how dementia patients are handled by police needs to be talked about.
“Italian is her first language,” said Angela. “She would not answer to somebody she doesn’t know.”
The 80-year-old was officially diagnosed with dementia three years ago, and Angela says as they’ve waited for a spot in an assisted home, it was decided the best thing for her mother was to stay in her home.
“This was the first wandering incident I know of,” she said. “It’s so unfair. This is from no fault of her own. She is law abiding and she raised two law-abiding children.”
Now, she says, her mom will never go home.
“I am worried this is the beginning of the end for her,” she said.
The SIU is investigating the Aug. 28 incident. One subject officer and two witness officers have been identified.
