The PC police are on the prowl again. This time, they’re targeting a Colorado restaurant owner. Pete Turner opened his restaurant 20 years ago and is currently in the process of expansion. He named the restaurant, “Illegal Pete’s,” after his father who had a “rebellious streak.”
But a pro-immigrant rights group is trying to force him to change the chain’s name because it’s too “derogatory and offensive.” Oh, and it’s also racist, apparently.
Nearly 20 years ago, Pete Turner named his now-expanding restaurant chain. When thinking about what to call it, he eventually decided to name it after his father, “who had a rebellious streak” and was also named Pete. Thus, the name “Illegal Pete’s” was born.
Now, with his seventh store set to open in Colorado, pro-immigration rights groups are calling on him to rename or close his stores, saying that the word “illegal” in “connection with a person’s name is derogatory and offensive.”
Not only that, but the use of the word “illegal” is racist, according to those calling on Mr. Turner to change the name. Cheryl Distaso, a local resident calling on the owner to change the name, stated, “The crux of it is that it’s become a racial slur.”
And the fact that it has nothing to do with illegal immigration does not matter, according to Distaso. “The impact of that word in this day and this town is different and ultimately,” she said, “it’s the impact of our actions that we’re responsible for.”
She is backed up by groups like Race Forward, a pro-immigration group, that says that the term “illegal immigrant” is a weasel term used by anti-immigrant people to “dehumanize” others.
