An elderly Dallas man reportedly used a gun he was legally carrying to shoot and kill a 36-year-old who was trying to rob him and his wife outside a grocery store Tuesday.
The incident happened at an Aldi grocery store located on Forest Lane at around 7:15 p.m., The Blaze reports.
Dallas police have identified the robbery suspect as Mike Angel Carmillio, who approached 71-year-old Ronnie Lummus and his wife as they walked out of Aldi, snatching a gold necklace from the woman’s neck.
Carmillio knocked the woman to the ground and attempted to rob her, The Dallas Morning News reports. That’s when Lummus, who has a concealed handgun permit, pulled out a gun and shot the attacker multiple times as he tried to make a getaway in his car.
Carmillio wasn’t quick enough, though, as he died in his car, causing it to run into a parked vehicle.
Investigators questioned other witnesses, the elderly woman and Lummus, who told officers that he was afraid the man would hurt him or his wife during the robbery.
According to WFAA 8, under Texas law, “a person can legally shoot someone who is robbing them if they think just after the robbery, that is the only way they are going to be able to recover their property. The shooting must also occur as the robbery is taking place — a person could not hunt down the suspect later.”
