A Lawyer representing Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis compared the fundamentalist, Constitution-defying public employee to Jews persecuted in Nazi Germany.
Davis was sent to jail on Thursday for continuing to disobey court orders to issue same-sex marriage licenses. She has maintained that complying with the Supreme Court’s landmark decision legalizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states violates her religious beliefs, according to Right Wing Watch.
Appearing on Crosstalk on Wednesday, attorney Matt Staver of the Liberty Counsel compared Davis to Jews under the Nazis.
“Does that mean that if you’re Christian, don’t apply here; if you’re a Jew, you gotta get — what happened in Nazi Germany, what happened there first, they removed the Jews from government public employment, then they stopped patronizing them in their private businesses, then they continued to stigmatize them, then they were the ‘problems,’ then they killed them,” Staver said. “The fact of the matter is, she has a right to this employment and you don’t lose your constitutional liberties just because you are employed by the government.”
Davis ordered her staff to flout the law by refusing to issue marriage licenses. She has had numerous court hearings since the Supreme Court ruling and lost every appeal. On Thursday, she appeared in a contempt of court hearing and was remanded into custody of the U.S. Marshals for continuing to defy the law despite being turned away by every court.
According to local KOWK, Davis was given one more chance Thursday afternoon to comply with court orders or spend the night in jail.
Staver said she wouldn’t resign because she is popular locally.
“[S]he’d probably be able to win the governor’s seat right now rather than just the clerk of Rowan County. She’s there to do a duty, a job and the job duty was changed,” Staver told Crosstalk.
The Nazis detained and slaughtered millions of Jews in internment camps during World War II simply because of the fact they were born Jewish.
