7 Reasons to Choose Goat Milk

There has been a lot of debate concerning milk, especially lately. Cow’s milk (raw or pasteurized), goats milk, nut and even hemp milk. Some people don’t believe in drinking any form of milk is necessary at all. Goats milk is becoming even more popular than cow’s milk and rightly so. Plus, who doesn’t love goat cheese, I know I do!
Goats milk is a great option for people that have trouble processing lactose (milk sugar that gives it its sweetness). It contains less lactose than cow’s milk so our stomach require less lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose) digest the milk entirely.
Children tend to be more sensitive to the amount of lactose in cow’s milk. According to this study , goats milk may be a hypoallergenic alternative.
“Goat milk as a substitute for cow milk was studied in 38 children during a 5 months period. The children on goat milk surpassed those on cow milk in weight gain, height, skeletal mineralization, and blood serum contents of Vitamin A, calcium, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and hemoglobin. Similar findings were obtained in studies with rats . In French clinical studies over 20 years with cow milk allergy patients the conclusion was that substitution with goat milk was followed by “undeniable” improvements . In other French extensive clinical studies with children allergic to cow milk, the treatment with goat milk produced positive results in 93% of the children and was recommended as a valuable aid in child nutrition because of less allergenicity and better digestibility than cow milk.”
Additional research suggests goats milk may benefit inflammation. Another reason why it’s easier for people with bowel inflammation to drink goats milk over cows milk. Goat’s milk is slightly alkaline, unlike cow’s milk which is slightly acidic and fat molecules in goats milk are much smaller than the fat molecules in cows milk.

Did You Know?

  • Goat cheese contains less lactose than cheese made from cow’s milk, so it is typically well tolerated by those with lactose intolerance
  • Goats milk is formed with shorter amino acid protein chains than cow’s milk. Because of this, many people that have a milk protein allergy tend to tolerate goat cheese
  • Another health benefit of goats milk is its closer to a human mother’s milk. It has a chemical make up that is closer to human milk making it easier for our stomachs to digest
  • According to several sources, goat’s milk takes (at the most) 30 minutes to digest, compared to 2 hours or more for cow’s milk.
  • Goat milk is an alkaline-forming food. This helps keep the pH level of your body at the proper level. It also acts as an antacid for an occasional bout of heartburn, acid reflux, or other related digestive issues.
  • There is no need to homogenize goats milk; it is naturally homogenized. Homogenization is a process done to cow’s milk to equally distribute the fat molecules so that when you purchase a jug from your grocery store it doesn’t have milk curd (milk cream) floating on the top of your milk like raw milk does. If you put a glass each of fresh goat’s and cow’s milk in the refrigerator overnight, the cow’s milk separates, and the goat’s milk does not. Homogenization of milk also causes fat cells to break, releasing a free radical called Xanthine Oxidase. As we know, free radicals aren’t good for you; they cause DNA mutations, among other things.
  • Goat milk tends to be less tainted/processed than regular dairy ingredients.
When shopping for goats milk, cheese or dairy product in general, read the ingredients. There is no need for any additives like starches, sugars or preservatives. It’s important to know what we are giving our families and make informed decisions about or health and overall wellbeing. I hope this article helps inform you on what a great option goats milk may be. It’s worth a try!
