Besides providing you with quality family time and good cheer, Christmas dinner offers a bevy of surprisingly healthy dishes, as long as you don't overdo it. From the main course and yummy sides to desserts and holiday beverages, here are 11 healthy dishes that you can dig into this Christmas.
While ham may not be the best option for your body, its honey coating will surely warm your heart. So if you're going to eat ham, perhaps honey-baked is your best bet. A study conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that honey contains antioxidants that may help protect against heart disease. The findings were presented at the 2002 American Chemical Society's national meeting in Boston.

Honey has several other benefits: It helps prolong the freshness of meat products and guards against harmful byproducts of meat oxidation that may increase the risk of heart disease, according to the researchers. The study also showed that the range of antioxidants in honey is comparable to that found in fruits like apples, oranges, strawberries and bananas. Of course, too much ham can be unhealthy no matter its honey content.
Whether they're in a tossed salad with cranberries and walnuts or served topped with cream, dark, leafy vegetables are a great way to fill up at the dinner table. Collard greens are especially nutritious, according to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry in 2002. Collards, which are greens that are in the same family as cabbage and broccoli, are considered a traditional Southern dish.

Turns out, they are a rich source of the disease-fighting antioxidant lutein, according to University of Maryland chemist Frederick Khachik. Previous research has shown that lutein may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, which is a common cause of blindness. Turkey is beneficial, no matter how you cut it. Dark meat or white meat, the gobbler contains tryptophan — an amino acid that is crucial for good health, as our bodies need it to make certain proteins. The body then uses these proteins to help build new cells.

According to a 2005 study published in the journal Science, tryptophan can also aid in alleviating multiple sclerosis symptoms. The natural chemical can soothe the overactive immune system of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, according to the researchers, who used mouse models in the study.

Other tryptophan-rich foods include cheese, nuts and shellfish.
This holiday season, don't shy away from the bread basket. Bread crust is a rich source of cancer-fighting antioxidants, according to a 2002 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. German chemist Thomas Hofmann found that the crust — which is plentiful in stuffing — provides more of a health benefit than the rest of the bread.

After baking bread using a conventional sourdough mixture of rye and wheat flour, the researchers analyzed its antioxidant content. They found that the process of baking bread produced the antioxidant pronyl-lysine, which was eight times more abundant in the crust than in the rest of the bread.

The researchers then applied the crust-derived antioxidant to human intestinal cells, finding that pronyl-lysine is the most effective component in bread for boosting the level of phase II enzymes. Previous studies have shown that these enzymes play a role in cancer prevention.
A common side dish at the holiday table, corn straight from the can actually packs more nutrients than fresh corn on the cob, according to a 2002 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The heat processing of sweet canned corn significantly raises the corn's level of naturally occurring compounds called phenolics, said study researcher Rui Hai Liu of Cornell University. These beneficial compounds help fight disease, including cancer and heart disease.

Oranges and clementines — the juicy citrus fruits that are in season during wintertime — are vitamin goldmines. They contain vitamin C and the pigment beta-cryptoxanthin, both of which may act as antioxidants, according to 2005 study.

Researchers from the United Kingdom found that even a modest increase in fruit and vegetables containing beta-cryptoxanthin and vitamin C, such as one glass of freshly squeezed orange juice each day, may protect against inflammatory joint diseases.

Coffee is good for the cardiovascular system, too, according to the Iowa Women’s Health Study, which tracked 27,000 women for 15 years and found that those who drank one to three cups of java a day reduced their risk of cardiovascular disease by 24 percent. However, the researchers noted that this benefit diminished as the quantity of coffee rose above three cups.

So go ahead and pour yourself another cup o' Joe — just don't go overboard.
When it comes to picking a healthy holiday drink, hot cocoa tops both red wine and tea in antioxidants, according to a 2003 study. Chang Yong Lee of Cornell University and colleagues examined the benefits of the chocolate-y beverage, finding that the antioxidant concentration in cocoa was almost two times stronger than red wine per serving.

For an even healthier way to enjoy the flavor-rich drink, avoid adding extra sugar and make it using hot water or skim milk instead of whole milk.

The Christmas season is often associated with gluttony and over-indulgence - and why not too? It's probably my favourite time of the year; we're all allowed to go a bit bananas now and then.
Thankfully, your tale of Christmas nutrition need not be one of bulging eyes matched by expanding waistlines. There are some seasonal staples around at this time of year that have some great hidden health benefits. Make sure you include them in your Christmas food wish list and the Yuletide season need not be as damaging as some will have you believe.
Sprouts of hope
First on the list is the humble brussels sprout. You may groan at the thought of them, but the evidence suggests that brussels are far from the nation's most hated vegetable: over the Christmas period, Britains supermarkets sell almost 650 tonnes per week.
Sprouts have the same chemistry as all of the brassica’s (like cabbage and broccoli) but with super concentrated levels of key nutrients. The most important is the isothiocyanates, a chemical group that has antimutagenic activity. This means they help cells correctly metabolise certain compounds that could otherwise trigger mutations leading to cancer.
Brussels sprouts are also a wonderful source of beta carotene and several important minerals like magnesium.
'Probiotic' parsnip
Next, and one of my firm favourites, is the parsnip. These gorgeous root vegetables are a great food for digestive health.
The power of the parsnip is all down to a large indigestible sugar called an oligosaccharide, which lends the vegetable its distinctive sweet flavour. Oligosaccharide essentially acts as a food source for the good bacteria in the gut, which ferment the compound as they feed on it. During this process, the bacterial colony can grow and strengthen.
During fermentation the bacteria also release beneficial compounds such as butyric acid, which helps to protect the gut from damage.
Red cabbage relaxant
A good helping of spiced balsamic red cabbage will always adorn my Christmas dinner plate. As well as adding an amazing colour contrast to your meal, red cabbage can give your body a nutritional boost.
The deep colour in red cabbage comes from a group of compounds called flavonoids. These have been well studied in recent years, and are known to deliver a broad array of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
Recent discoveries about the properties of flavonoids by researchers at the University of Reading are particularly interesting. They found that flavonoids can enter the cells that make up the inner lining of our blood vessels. Once inside these cells, they seem to have a slight irritant effect, causing the cells to secrete more of one of their normal products - something called nitric oxide. The main role of nitric oxide is to relax the muscular walls of the blood vessels. As the muscle relaxes, the blood vessels widen, and blood pressure goes down. So, long story short: flavonoid rich foods can have a transient lowering effect upon blood pressure.
Sleep-inducing turkey
This list wouldn't be complete without the inclusion of turkey. Now, whilst it may not be the most exciting meat in the world, turkey does have one very interesting property: it's a rich source of the essential amino acid tryptophan.
Tryptophan is used to create the neurotransmitter serotonin, which then goes on to form another neurotransmitter called melatonin, which helps induce a deep sleep. So eating turkey can help you sleep!
However, one thing you need to remember is that tryptophan rich foods must be consumed with a carbohydrate source, in order to get the amino acid accross the blood brain barrier where it can be converted. Which could explain the post-Christmas dinner coma (I'm sure eating your own bodyweight and drinking a gallon of champagne has nothing to do with it).
