Swiss woman dies after attempting to live on sunlight; Woman gave up food and water on spiritual journey

Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger reports that a woman starved to death after embarking on a spiritual diet that required her to stop eating or drinking and live off sunlight alone.

The Zurich newspaper reported Wednesday that the unnamed Swiss woman in her fifties decided to follow the radical fast in 2010 after viewing an Austrian documentary about an Indian guru who claims to have lived this way for 70 years.

Tages-Anzeiger says there have been similar cases of self-starvation in Germany, Britain and Australia.

The prosecutors' office in the Swiss canton (state) of Aargau confirmed Wednesday that the woman died in January 2011 in the town of Wolfhalden in eastern Switzerland.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Rissi says prosecutors haven't opened a criminal investigation over the woman's death.

  1. Well, starving yourself to death is honourable enough, I guess. I always figured that particular guru would be found eating seafood linguini in a comfy sweater, when he was off work.

    Hey, it beats smoking.

  2. Only in a 24/7 news environment could an idiot like this get any press.

  3. This is another, "See Religion is for Fools" article. The MSM loves to basj religion - kill God.

Going off food and water is in fact possible, but only when authorized by a real saint. If you go into a seclussion (khalwa) for forty days or more and are given permission to stop eating and drinking, within three days your body will no longer need food or water. But this is only reserved for people who have Divine permission, this woman clearly did not.

If somone sees something on TV and tries to emulate it at home, many people have died doing stunts they have seen "professionals" successfuly perform. That does not mean the pros did not do it.

Believe, or do not believe, but it is possible.

  4. Some people simply believe everything they are told, regardless of just how foolish it sounds... 70 years without food or water?! And you think 'I'm going to do this!'... No wonder this planet's so screwed up.

  6. Yes, I noticed that people are trying to popularize Indian guru's ideas of how to wake up.

This sounds a lot like the silly person who drank a whole bottle of essential oil and died.

    There is always one.

  7. Though I understand why people "bash religion" I do not think this post does. Is it possible to live without food and water? The body has been conditioned to live off the nonsense it does today if we trained our bodies to live off the sun it would adapt and do just that. This lady was probably a very loving lady whose journey took her here. Unfortunately people do believe everything they see on t.v. with religion being one of them. :) My Opinion...

HOW do you kill god? lol and how do you define a REAL saint? lol how do you define divine permission? lol because the "saint" said so? lol Broken earth's explanations are examples of why people bash cults, religions, snake oil salesmen, charlatans and their weak-minded followers...
