A 4-year-old girl was shot and killed in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon during what her family described as a road rage encounter, KOB-TV reported.
“This is a complete disrespect of human life, and we’re starting to see this throughout this nation. This is something that should not be happening in Albuquerque, New Mexico, let alone anywhere else in the United States,” Police Chief Gordon Eden said at a press conference, adding. “We need to rise up as a community and say enough is enough.”
The girl was found inside her parents’ car by an off-duty Bernadillo County sheriff’s deputy after the parents had pulled over to the side of Interstate 40. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died from a gunshot to the head.
The parents were not injured in the shooting despite being in the vehicle at the time of the incident. KOAT-TV reported that authorities did not believe as of Tuesday night that the family knew the other people involved in the encounter, including the suspected shooter.
Neither the shooter nor the other vehicle involved in the fatal dispute have been identified. Eden said authorities have not discussed the cause of the incident with the girl’s parents, citing the need for them to grieve.
