Passenger plane 'with 127 on board' crashes near Islamabad

A passenger plane with around 127 people on board has crashed near Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International airport.

The Bhoja Airline flight from Karachi came down just six miles short of the airport according to local television reports.

Early reports suggested that the plane came down in the middle of undeveloped land and a wildlife park, but there were unconfirmed reports of houses on fire and bodies strewn along the ground.

Police officials said emergency teams were on their way to the crash site. They did not provide immediate details on the crash site. Witnesses close to the Baria Town residential complex near the airport said emergency vehicles were seen in the area.

State television said all hospitals in Islamabad and nearby Rawalpindi have been put on alert.

Aviation officials were not immediately available for comment.

Plane crashes are relatively rare in Pakistan, where inter-city travel is most efficient by air.

In July 2010, an Airbus 321 passenger jet operated by the private airline Airblue crashed into hills overlooking Islamabad while coming in to land after a flight from Karachi, killing 152 people on board.

  1. Extremely sad. My heartfelt symapthies with the families who lost their loved once.

Is it not the same airline who was banned earlier from flying when it was discovered that its aircraft tires were being repaired in a road side tire repair shop? Once again corruption and Corporate profits has taken priority over human lives. Too sad. Tariq
